The US online gaming community has met with a few setbacks over the past few weeks but they are still indicative of small steps being taken in the right direction. In other words there seems to be a ray of hope at the end of the tunnel for the US residents with regard to online casino gambling in the US, and the current laws that govern the activity. Barney Frank’s concerted efforts are finally paying off in the long run despite all odds.
The first of these is the bill introduced by Rep Barney frank in the House which will come up for further legislative hearing during the month of April. HR 2266 of the bill is seeking postponement of the implementation of the rules by a year, and HR2267 is attempting to put in place a licensing and regulatory structure for online gambling. Another issue, which is expected to surface, is the difficulties indicated by banks in implementing the UIGEA rules. Though this had been discussed in 2009, it looks like another house committee hearing would have to take place prior to the bills being sent to the house for a vote.
The next news item is actually a follow up on the earlier one, where it has been reported that the National Indian Gaming Association, are moving to block Barney’s bills and hinder them from being passed. This was on account of the Morongo Indians who are trying to get exclusive rights to Internet poker in California. However, this was not looked at favorably and the Morongo Chairman Robert Martin is pretty disappointed at the state of affairs, and that their request has not been viewed favorably. With all these issues taking different turns, it would actually mean less opposition for Barney Frank and his team, when their bills reach the House for a favorable hearing in due course.
