Kris Zutis, a young computer graduate from the University of Dundee has recently designed a computer program to sense card counters and pinpoint dealer errors. The system uses complex algorithms to study information captured by cameras which are set up inside casinos. This project was part of his curriculum in his final year of computing, where he worked closely with staff from the Dundee Gala Casino. The new system is attracting worldwide attention, and is highlighted in the latest edition of the esteemed New Scientist Magazine.

Zutis has been asked to showcase his invention at the International Conference on Computer Vision Systems (ICVS) in Belgium this week, and he has already prepared an article called Who’s Counting?: Real-Time Blackjack Monitoring for Card Counting Detection. This conference features a major scientific forum in the computer field and attracts top names from the same field every year.

Kris Zutis is originally from Latvia but later moved to Scotland when he was around 10 years old. Speaking on this project he said that he wanted his system to be commercially feasible to prevent blackjack card counting, and though the potential has been identified there is a long way to go before it gets universally recognized, and he hoped that the conference at Belgium would compliment his efforts.

‘Computer vision’ was one of the choices when it came to choosing a subject for the final year project, and Zutis had found it a suitable topic since he wanted to combine what he studied, with something that he was interested in and enjoyed. Though not a professional gambler he loves playing poker, and had intended to relate his project to gambling and interestingly blackjack was more suited to a computer vision system, and so he took on from there.

Zutis works at the University of Dundee as a full-time research analyst with the School of Computing, and is hopeful that the system designed and developed by him will pay off in the long run. He wishes that his concerted efforts in detecting card counters while a game is in progress, monitoring the cards of players, and tracking the player’s wagering patterns would bring him worldwide recognition.
