Deadwood celebrates not just 20 years of legalized gambling this month but also the economic boost that has come along with it. The state was once actually close to being ‘dead’ for real about 20 years ago with its crumbling buildings and dying businesses. But once the voters approved of the change in the state constitution that legalized gambling and allowed casinos to open, the state had a complete face lift. Main Street was converted to casinos and real estate was selling for soaring prices.

And all the change was definitely catching the attention of many. After making his hit movie “Dances with Wolves”, actor Kevin Costner bought a casino in South Dakota. HBO even created the popular series “Deadwood” that had 3 successful seasons and was centered on the notorious past of the town.

Today Deadwood is home to over 36 dazzling casinos that hold 3,500 slot machines and about 100 card tables where you can play blackjack casino games. The casino industry has done so much like generate over 2,000 jobs and millions of dollars in profit. There is plenty of money for Deadwood to restore its buildings and infrastructure.

This picturesque town is comfortably located in a canyon between pine covered mountains and is just close enough to Mount Rushmore, the Badlands and Sturgis for folks to add these sights to their itinerary when they visit Deadwood. So the place attracts a lot of tourists as well.

The newest attraction is the new $47 million resort, The Lodge Deadwood that will be ready for all the action and entertainment early December. It includes a four-story hotel, convention center, water park, restaurant, bar and casino.

Statistics show that gamblers had bet more than $12.7 billion in the Deadwood casinos. The Gaming Commission of South Dakota has noted that the casinos won back close to $11.6 billion, and their gross revenue was a massive $1.1 billion.

The casinos have paid $208 million in taxes and fees. Part of the taxes went to state coffers, while the city of Deadwood got more than $123 million for local developments.

The sights, the great casinos and the amazing entertainment are what bring visitors from all over to all through the year and the town intends to keep it that way.
